It’s Apple Season!

apple picking near PortlandThe Oregon Heritage Farms is known for its tasty caramel apples.

Hold up, pumpkins. You and your pumpkin patches don’t get to have all the fun this fall. In the Tualatin Valley, an apple a day is definitely a part of your fall getaway. Find apple picking near Portland for the ultimate autumn activity.

Apple Picking and Ready-Picked Apples

While u-pick season is over for the most part, we still have plenty of apple season to celebrate.

Situated in a picturesque corner of the Tualatin Valley’s rural farmlands, Smith Berry Barn invites apple lovers to pick their Jonagold, Liberty and Melrose (and many more) varieties from its oh-so-sweet Hillsboro orchard. (Open Tuesday-Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.).

Oregon Heritage Farm (located not far from Smith Berry Barn) grows 10 varieties of apples and are available for purchase at its farm store. In addition to fresh-picked apples, try the apple cider, caramel apples and apple cider donuts. (Open daily, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.)

The Beaverton Farmers Market also is a great place to stock up on seasonal apples grown throughout the region. (Open Saturday, 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.) Many of Tualatin Valley’s farmers markets are open through October.

Apple Cider for Grown-ups

For grownup apple juice, try a cider flight at Bull Run Cider‘s taproom in Forest Grove. For its estate cider, Bull Run uses fruit grown in its own orchard. The taproom offers five house ciders, as well as 10 additional taps from other Northwest makers. (Open Thursday-Saturday, 2-6:30 p.m.)Save
